1.4.3 - Contrast (minimum)

The intent of this Success Criterion is to provide enough contrast between text and its background so that it can be read by people with moderately low vision (who do not use contrast-enhancing assistive technology).

Ways to meet the criterion

Provide adequate contrast between background and foreground (fonts) to assist individuals with moderately low vision. The actual colours don’t matter as long as poor contrast is avoided.

Ensure that:

  • contrast has a ratio of at least 4.5:1
  • both background and foreground colours are specified

Exceptions are:

  • text or images that are purely decorative
  • part of logo or brand name
  • pictures
