1.3.4 - Orientation

Benefits users with:

  • dexterity impairments, who have a mounted device in their fixed orientation
  • low-vision who view content in the orientation that works best for them, for example to increase the text size by viewing content in landscape

Intent

The intent of this success criterion is to ensure that content displays in the orientation (portrait or landscape) preferred by the user. This is especially important for people who have the device permanently fixed in one orientation (e.g. on the arm of a power wheelchair). If the device is not locked and the user changes the orientation, the application must adapt to the new orientation.

Ways to meet the criterion

Content does not restrict its view and operation to a single display orientation, such as portrait or landscape, unless a specific display orientation is essential.

Examples where a particular display orientation may be essential are a bank check, a piano application, slides for a projector or television, or virtual reality content where content is not necessarily restricted to landscape or portrait display orientation.

Examples

Success

Digital services can display the contents in both portrait and landscape orientation.

Failure

Content restricts its view when users rotate their device to view in the orientation (portrait or landscape).
