2.1.1 - Keyboard
The intent of this success criterion is to ensure that, wherever possible, content can be operated through a keyboard or keyboard interface (so an alternate keyboard can be used). This allows the site to be operable by people with vision loss as well as user unable to use a mouse.
Ways to meet the criterion
Keyboard accessibility is one of the most important aspects of disability access. Due to their disability, some individuals rely almost exclusively on keyboard usage:
- blind individuals lack the required hand eye coordination required with mouse usage
- individuals with various motor disabilities who cannot operate a mouse
- individuals who may not be able to operate a standard keyboard and rely on "puff and sip" devices that interact with other assistive software and hardware
Ensure all functionality IS available from a keyboard except when underlying function requires input that depends on the path of the user’s movement and not just the endpoints i.e. hand drawing.
